How to Start a Diesel Engine After Running Out of Fuel

Running out of diesel is inconvenient but manageable. Here’s a step-by-step guide to restart a diesel engine safely.

1. Refill the Tank

  • Add clean diesel fuel to the tank. Avoid overfilling to leave room for expansion.

2. Check for Air in the Fuel Lines

Diesel engines are prone to airlocks when the fuel system is dry. This prevents the engine from starting.

3. Prime the Fuel System

  • Use the manual primer pump (if available) to push fuel through the system.
  • On modern vehicles, turn the ignition to “on” without starting the engine to let the electric pump prime the system.

4. Bleed the Air from the Fuel Lines

  • Locate the bleed screws on the fuel injectors or pump.
  • Loosen them slightly and crank the engine until fuel flows out steadily. Tighten the screws afterward.

5. Start the Engine

  • Turn the ignition and crank the engine. It may take several attempts before it starts.
  • Avoid cranking for too long to prevent battery drain.

Tips to Avoid Running Out of Diesel Again

  • Monitor fuel levels regularly.
  • Always refill before the tank is less than one-quarter full to prevent airlocks.
